Browser Test for Hieroglyphs

When possible, we prefer to use hieroglyphic fonts and transliteration fonts, rather than making images of the text in question. However, many fonts do not show hieroglyphs well; many fonts are lacking one or more of the transliteration symbols; and some browsers may not correctly arrange the glyphs even if the individual glyphs display correctly.

By viewing this page, you can assess how well your browser handles this site, and you can adjust accordingly.

If the text in this column …doesn’t look a lot like this image …then …
Your browser is not correctly displaying the glyph used for transliterating the Egyptian hieroglyph G1: 𓄿

You may find that these lessons have some missing/broken characters until your browser is a bit more full-featured. We serve the transliteration font directly from this website, so this is most likely not an issue in browsers in 2025 and later.
Your browser is not correctly displaying the glyph used for transliterating the Egyptian hieroglyph D36: 𓂝

The same warning applies here as in the row above; these lessons may have some broken characters that could cause some confusion.
Your browser is not correctly displaying the glyph used in the “British” system of transliteration, and in the Leiden Unified Transliteration, for transliterating the Egyptian hieroglyph M17: 𓇋

You’re in better luck than with the above two cases, because (at time of updating this), these lessons use the “European” system, which uses the letter j to transliterate that glyph, so you will only have issues in the one or two places where we mention the other systems.
𓊪𓐰𓂋𓇋𓆵𓈅𓐰𓏤If you see the hieroglyphs, but they’re not stacked together as in the image, your browser is not correctly showing the glyphs arranged in quadrats.

You will still be able to use these lessons, but you should be aware that the Egyptians preferred to write hieroglyphs more compactly and neatly than your browser is showing you.

Lesson 2 covers quadrats in a bit more detail, so you can learn some general guidance about them.
