Exercises for Lesson 3

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the vocabulary list at the end of the lesson. This will be true for every later lesson as well.

Be sure you understand why one of your answers is right or wrong. I recommend not moving on until you’ve got the hang of Questions 1, 2, and 3. As noted in Question 4, that one is more of a “longer term” memorization goal. You can move on before that’s perfected.

Have fun! No one’s testing you but yourself.

Question 1. Write the following combinations of letters (which are actual Egyptian words) in the standard uniliteral hieroglyphs. (The answers will show you the suggested way for those glyphs to be stacked into quadrats, but go ahead and keep each word separate from its neighbors.)

Pay careful attention to the diacritical marks, especially on the various forms of “H”.

Question 4: Give yourself a little practice learning the alphabetical order. Do not stress about this. You can and should proceed with the lessons before you perfect this. The more comfortable you get with just seeing the sounds written, the easier it will be for you to memorize them.

Furthermore, you can make a cheat sheet for yourself, an index card or something, and put it somewhere convenient when you’re looking up things in a hieroglyphic dictionary.

Here is a list of all the sounds in the alphabet, in a scrambled order. Your exercise, as you learn it and feel ready for it, is to see if you can put them in the correct order instead. Feel free to move on to the next lesson before you’ve perfected this. Just give it a go now and then, correcting yourself. It will come.

The scrambled alphabet is as follows. Feel free to press the button below it to rescramble it for practice.
